The short answer
Bring the piece and a photo ID. That’s it. The appraisal is free, it takes minutes, and if you take the price you get paid the same day.
What to bring
Four things, and two of them are optional.
- The piece, whole or broken. A snapped chain, a single earring or a bent ring weighs the same as a complete piece.
- A photo ID. New York requires it for this kind of transaction, and it gets recorded.
- Box, papers or a certificate, if you kept them. They help with watches and diamonds, but they aren’t required.
- Your question. That one isn’t required either: if you don’t know what you have, that’s exactly the reason to come in.
What happens at the counter
It’s done in front of you, always in the same order.
- It goes under the loupe. Stamps, marks and the setting say plenty before the scale gets touched.
- The karat gets tested. An acid test confirms whether it’s 10, 14, 18 or 24 karat.
- It goes on the scale. The number comes up on the display, and the display faces you.
- You get the number, and where it comes from: karat, weight and the market that day.
How you get paid
Same day, with nobody’s approval to wait on. Cash, Zelle or card, whichever you prefer.
No coming back tomorrow and no third party signing off on the transaction. It closes at the counter and you walk out with your money.
And if you’d rather not sell
You take your piece home and nothing happened. Plenty of people in the neighborhood come in just to find out what they have, and that’s fine: the appraisal is free either way.
