Layaway: how to put a piece aside in Inwood, NY

Rose gold chain with a cross pendant hanging from it, on a black velvet bust.

You leave a deposit, the piece comes out of the case and gets held in your name.

The piece you liked doesn’t have to wait for the end of the month.

You saw the chain, it stuck in your head, and your wallet says not yet. That’s what layaway is for.

Put it aside today, pay it off in parts. That simple, and in the same store where you saw it.

It gets put aside at the counter, with the piece in front of you and Tito or Raffi walking you through how it works.

How it works

You leave a deposit, the piece comes out of the case and gets held in your name. You pay at your own pace and take it home once it’s covered. Layaway carries no interest.

Ask about the piece you liked and at the counter they’ll tell you whether it can be put aside. Ask how each payment gets recorded.

You don’t need to be good with numbers to use it. It’s the way people in the neighborhood have always put something aside: the piece held, your name written down.

Who it’s for

For the gift with a date on it: a birthday, a graduation, a Christmas you can already see coming. Put it aside early, pay it off calmly, and the day arrives with the piece paid for and ready to wrap.

For the engagement ring you choose without rushing. Put it aside today and pick it up, paid in full, when the moment for the question comes.

For the person who already knows what they want and doesn’t want it to get away: the Cuban link in the case or the earrings they saw on Instagram.

And for anyone who’d rather not put the piece on a card. Here you pay in parts and take the whole piece home.

Why it’s worth it

The piece stops sitting in the case for someone else. It’s held in your name, in a store with locks on the doors.

You go at your own pace and nobody rushes you. You take it home once it’s paid in full, not before and not with a balance behind it. That day the piece comes out of where it was held and goes back in the case, for you.

And you take it home from the same store where you chose it, from the same people who showed it to you. That counts too.

What to ask in store

Each option has its terms, and they get explained in full at the counter, before you leave a deposit. Nobody puts their name to something they don’t understand.

Ask how much the deposit is, how often you pay and what happens if you change your mind. Three questions and you walk out with peace of mind.

At the counter we take card, debit, Zelle and cash. Ask how each payment gets made.

The payment options page covers the other ways to pay at the store, explained with the same calm.
